Asian Rust - Fungicides
Asian Rust has been found in only three counties in Florida and one county in Southern Georgia to date. University personnel have been scounting fields in Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas and have not found any areas with Asian Rust. This is good news for us in the midwest, where Soybean Aphids may pose a greater threat than Asian Rust will this year. Now for the fungicide issues, BASF has made a great effort to market Headline (Strobiluron Fungicide)as a preventative for rust as well as a plant health product to increase soybean yields. Growers want of this product has far out distanced BASF's ability to supply this product to dealers and growers. There are many excellent Fungicides on the market and more coming through the Section 18 process and should be on the market by June 1st 2005. With Asian Rust coming this quikly has caught many of us off guard, Manufacturers included. Many of the fungicides you are able to use today will have plant health on the label over the next few years, but with a TWIST, these products will be talking about yield protection, if some of the more common fungal diseases are in the field then these products will protect the 3bu. to 8bu./a robbed by these diseases. We have a lot to learn about Asian Rust and the Fungicide market, we are only in the infancy in the US. Have a safe and profitable 2005.
